Ease and Accessibility

Lee and Henrietta Healy greatly benefitted from an accessibility ramp installed on their home through the Home Repairs Program. Due to Lee’s Parkinson’s disease, Henrietta had a difficult time helping Lee navigate the stairs in front of their house. Thanks to the Home Repairs Program, an accessibility ramp was installed allowing easy access for Lee’s wheelchair.

“He's in a wheelchair for the most part, and so to walk him down those steps was very hard,” said Henrietta. “The ramp really has helped so much.”

Lee and Henrietta were inspired by the work of the volunteers that helped build their accessibility ramp.

“They did it in such a timely fashion and with utmost respectability,” said Henrietta. “They would call ahead and ask exactly what time would be good for us and were always ready to comply to our wishes, too, of the time that they would be there.”

Lee and Henrietta’s friends and family were surprised with how affordable the accessibility ramp was to them. By offering an affordable payment plan and sliding scale system, Lee and Henrietta could pay for the ramp without outside assistance.

“When we said we were going to have this done, my brother thought we were going to pay a lot of money to install it,” said Henrietta. “Once it was done, he couldn't believe it.”

Thanks to their accessibility ramp, the couple can remain independent within their home and prevent future displacement. Overall, Lee and Henrietta are extremely grateful for their continued autonomy.
